Just a History Geek.

Watched a program on TV a few nights ago about life in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Nazi Occupation.

Bizarrely it was about what the people living there did to make food as the supplies they were given (presumably by the Nazi's) was highly rationed.

Now, riddle me this.

We are told that the Nazi philosophy was to kill every single Jew on the planet. Man. woman or child. We are also told that the purpose of the Warsaw Ghetto was just as a staging post where the inhabitants could later be shipped on to concentration camps to be either worked to death or gassed straight away.

It begs the question, at least it does for me, as to why the Nazi's gave them any food at all? Why make any attempt whatsoever to keep the inhabitants alive when the only purpose for most of them was for onward transmission to certain death? Why not just leave them all there to starve to death? Would that not have been the main purpose anyway? That they are dead? Using trains and personnel to transport them would have been a colossal waste of time and money when they were going to die anyway?

We are told that the Nazi's considered Jews as non human? Did non humans deserve to be fed? Especially at a time when Germany was being bombed and it's own people were starving. I would have thought they would have given whatever spare food supplies they had to their own people rather than to a people they hated and were marked for death anyway?

One of the many things we are told as fact that just doesn't make sense.

junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.9301226.287051163821161 -41.08637 82.907518836178852 29.22613tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-21735621183284818912022-08-09T10:08:00.000-07:002022-08-09T10:08:29.630-07:00ON OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN

Really saddened to hear of death of Olivia Newton John.

In 1977 when Grease was released I was either 13 or 14 and The Clash already had or were just about to change my life forever.

I remember going to see it at the old Avenue Cinema on Royal Avenue in Belfast. It's long gone now. I went with my old friend John Gray and recall we had to queue outside for ages.

There's no denying what a phenomenon Grease was then and to some extent still is.

It was everywhere. You couldn't escape it.

I loved it. Still do and have watched it more times than I care to recall.

More innocent times then. The songs are timeless to everyone no matter which genre you're a fan of.

ONJ was stunning. I obey all the sensible rules. Don't open email attachments from strangers and all the other stuff that just makes common sense.

Facebook is the only Social Media site that I'm a member of and I do enjoy using it most of the time. Unlike many others I'm not one of those users who stupidly accept every 'friend' request I receive and like everyone else I get a few every day. If it's not someone I personally know, a family member, a friend of a friend or at the very least someone I've had some sort of contact with I ignore and delete straight away. There are lunatics out there and they are best avoided.

Anyway, a few days I received a message from one of my Polish acquaintances on Facebook Messenger. Someone I've chatted to in the past and an all round genuine guy. His account had obviously been hacked in some way.

There was no attachment or dubious link or anything like that. To my horror what the message contained was a compendium of pictures of child sexual abuse. I deleted it immediately as soon as it registered with me what it was. It was appalling. Probably the vilest thing I've ever had the misfortune to see.

Now I'm not an angel and don't pretend to be. I watch 'normal' porn like probably a fair percentage of the adult human race. Not all the time but once in awhile. I'm not apologising for that or making an excuse for it. It's pretty normal I'd imagine. But this was something else. I've never come across anything like what was in those pictures ever before and hope to never do again.

The problem now is that I can't 'unsee' it and it's effected me terribly. I can't get it out of mind at all no matter how hard it try. I keep thinking about those poor kids forced to commit those terrible acts. Surely they must have parents? What makes a parent agree to subject their children to that sort of thing. It must effect them the rest of their lives. In nothing but negative ways. What are the adults that take part thinking about? Have they no guilt? They must be aware of what they doing and how totally wrong it is?

I'm trying really hard but no matter what I do those imagines are now in my mind and are there forever. I'm also worried that they are now hiding somewhere on my PC? You hear about that sort of thing happening.

I've been trying to find a Charity or somewhere that deals with this to at least have a chat with someone about the trauma I feel. Because it's real.

So far no luck with that but I had to write about it just to get something out there.

It's a Godless, horrendous world we live in it really is.
junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.9301226.287051163821161 -41.08637 82.907518836178852 29.22613tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-32655432338063978982021-12-21T17:37:00.004-08:002021-12-21T17:38:55.467-08:00IN THE CORNER OF SOME FOREIGN FIELD

'Someplace to stay

Enough to eat

Somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street

Where you can speak out loud about your doubts and fears

And what's more

No one ever disappears

You never hear that standard issue kicking in your door'

'You can relax on both sides of the tracks

And maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control

And everyone has recourse to the law

And no one kills the children anymore'

I have a few problems with Roger Waters these days. His vocal anti-Israeli views and trendy far left politics are completely at odds with what I believe but just sometimes his lyrics really just hit the spot.

Like these.

I don't watch the News much now. It depresses me. Seems to be wars or disruption everywhere. It's always bad news.

The World just seems to thrive on division. Be it race, religion, nationality, gender, whatever. It saddens me. Someone like me isn't allowed an opinion anymore or I'm branded as a Nazi amongst other things.

Here in the UK the murder of baby Star Hobson by her mother and her mother's 'partner' recently was heartbreaking.

Just how could anyone, let alone two people torture and murder an innocent 16 month old baby is beyond belief.

What sort of people are they?

Most of the world has some sort of religious beliefs. Most have some sort of deity figure to believe in.

As Christian I fail to understand how a kind, loving God lets something like this happen. I know how my Minister would answer that question. He would say God gives us all a choice in how to live our lives and that freedom of choice defines how we are and how we act. I don't know?

The Bible also says (somewhere) that every individual and that every act they commit has a purpose.

Begs the question - 'Just what in the name of f*ck' was the purpose of this one?'

I'll leave it there.
junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.9301226.287051163821161 -41.08637 82.907518836178852 29.22613tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-59919360920174326302021-10-19T04:27:00.000-07:002021-10-19T04:27:19.385-07:00'SHADDERS. I usually sleep on average around 14 hours of any 24 hour day. I tried to make it different but nothing seems to work. I go to bed now just whenever I feel like it and get up whenever I wake. Could be anytime day or night. If I have an appointment somewhere I will get up but otherwise it's just sleep, sleep and more sleep.

My Doctor has put me through every test known to man but it seems that it's not something physical and she puts it down to either medication or a symptom of depression or a mixture of both.

That's only the beginning of it. It's the nightmares that get to me. Every single night or day they come. Not many times now when I don't wake screaming and bathed in sweat. It's a difficult one to understand. One of those things about how the mind works I suppose. I hate falling asleep as I know that within minutes of closing my eyes it will begin.

As usual with dreams most of them are totally bizarre and don't make any sense at all. Some are pretty common visitors. The latest 'thing' from my Doctor is that it might be therapeutic to try and write them down as a way to try and understand them better. Not the full details but what memories they bring up and what way they make me feel and that sort of thing? Utter bollocks probably but I'm willing to give it a go?

Back in my mid to late teens I was never all that much a big hit with the opposite sex. The whole 'one night stand' thing never really happened for me. I never really had much confidence then (or now) and I've always been aware that I'm not the most attractive man to ever walk the Earth. There were a few but compared to every other normal human being probably not that many.

One of my dreams always involves a girl called Leigh. I won't give her surname just in the off chance that someone actually reads this. She was a lovely girl and just my type. Small and dark. Nothing ever changes with me that way. Must have been about 40 years ago I suppose. Me and Leigh actually had a few go's at it. Three I think. Met her once years after by accident on a Bus and then again when I used to call deliberately for Petrol where she worked. I liked her and have really no memories now of what happened that it didn't work out? I always considered her to be one of the ones that got away I suppose? My Dad really liked her too and said she was a 'keeper'. Suppose I was young then and had no experience or idea of how to actually be in any sort of relationship either casual or otherwise. I haven't physically seen her for years now but I do say Hello once an awhile now on Facebook which is nice. As far as I know she likes girls now. I'm frequently called a Homophobe but like a lot of things I'm accused of i'm not. I won't even pretend to understand but if 2 people are happy together then who am I to judge anyone?

For some unknown reason she is frequently in my dreams. And. no, it's not one of 'those' dreams.

The first one is always at her house. Only it's not actually her house. It takes place further up from where she lived at the turn off to Burney's Lane beside where Pamela Gordon used to live. There is apartments there now I think but in my dream it's always a bungalow. I'm waiting outside for her and she doesn't come out. Why I'm waiting there i've no idea? This waiting thing can go on for days without any purpose. It seems i really need to speak to her about something important but it never happens?

Second one is even more bizarre. I'm in the house and there is some sort of party going on. I hated that sort of thing then and hate it even more now. I always have the dog with me. I miss Clippy terribly and If I remember it right Leigh used to have a lovely Collie called Carly (I think). Lynne Millar and Sharon Williams are always there too. I'm trying to move some furniture or something too and it doesn't end well. People are drunk and getting on my nerves.

Makes you think about what actually goes on in your mind during nightmares?

Bizarre?

Answers on a postcard to the usual address as to what this one is all about?

junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.9301226.287051163821161 -41.08637 82.907518836178852 29.22613tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-77390268172478800322021-09-23T05:44:00.002-07:002021-09-23T05:52:24.731-07:00ON THAT COVID PASSPORT THING.
It appears that locally SDLP leader Colm Eastwood is calling for so called Covid Passports to be mandatory for entry into certain venues here in Northern Ireland?

Before I go on please note that I am not an Anti Vaxer or a Covid Denier. I have a Auto Immune Disorder so am particularity at risk from Covid. I have had both doses of the vaccine and wouldn't even know where to start on those idiots who think that it doesn't exist. The evidence is there and is overwhelming.

But. here's the thing.

If those imbeciles up at Stormont do bring in something making a Passport mandatory to be effective it will have to be made law. Law is the only thing that is enforceable. A policy or a mandate or whatever is not.

The only people that can enforce the law are the Police.

I would assume that this Passport would have to have some sort of individual photograph on it. Otherwise it would be pointless. Anybody could use someone's passport and there would be no way of proving it was or wasn't you? Unless the individual was asked to give an other form of pictorial ID along with the Passport? It's all pretty unclear right now.

Herein is a huge problem The only people that can legally ask to see your ID are the Police. Even then that is only in certain circumstances.

A member of the door staff at a Restaurant e.g. has no right whatsoever to demand your ID. They would be breaking the law by even asking for it, not you.

So are they now going to change the law that a civilian will be able to demand to see another civilian's ID?

And if you refuse the only course of action for them would be to call the Police?

There are other confusions surrounding this e.g. whether or not it's Private of Public property you would be trying to enter. No one can be trespassed from Public property or from Private property that is open to the Public.

You might be thinking but staff in places like Off Licensees can ask for ID. Well actually they can't. In a case like that if the staff think you are under age or have presented false ID they should call the Police as you would be suspected of breaking the Law. They get away with it as most members of the public are unaware of what they should do in a situation like that.

Whether or not, generally, a Passport is a good idea is neither here nor there.

It's totally unworkable and in it's present state would be a looming disaster.
junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.9301226.287051163821161 -41.08637 82.907518836178852 29.22613tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-50324852032974760422021-08-15T23:05:00.004-07:002021-08-23T06:48:32.767-07:00ON INSULTS AND FACT CHECKING.
Facebook can be so predictable sometimes.

It's the only one of those Social Media type things I use and I do post there on a fairly regular basis and comment on other posts when i feel I've something to say on whatever topic is in question. I do occasionally comment on Youtube too but the reactions there are pretty similar.

I can't be bothered arguing with total strangers much these days. It's pretty pointless and only leads to stress that I can do without. What I normally do is comment and then walk away. I hardly ever respond to a follow up comment. Life is so much easier that way.

But you always know what's to follow. Comment after comment of abuse, attempts at insults, those stupid gif/meme things and always, always ridiculous accusations. I often wonder if people dishing this sort of thing out actually take the time to read what you've said?

A case in point recently that I didn't respond to but will answer here.

BBC Northern Ireland, NORTHERN IRELAND is the words you should keep in mind here, had full coverage and even sent a camera crew to cover Boxer Kellie Harrington's gold medal win at the just finished Tokyo Olympics.

Now don't get me wrong, fair play to the girl and I wish her every success for the future but she is from Dublin and was representing the Republic of Ireland's Olympic team so I questioned what relevance this had to Northern Ireland sport?

Yes there are other points here which are for another day. I realise that several competitors at the games from NI chose to represent ROI and others represented the Team GB & NI team. But your Irish I hear you say....again another thing for another day. Why Team GB & NI is not just Team UK is yet another which I won't go into right now.

No sooner was my comment on when within milliseconds the abuse began. You can probably imagine the sort of usual stuff it said without me repeating it here.

But one comment in particular I'd like to look at in detail. My comment was described as 'Racist' and 'Sectarian'.

So then, number one 'Racist'.

Kellie Harrington is white. I am white too. So 'racist'? In what way am I racist against someone who is the same race as I am? I never mentioned or commented on her skin colour whatsoever?

Number two. 'Sectarian'.

I don't have the slightest idea what religion Miss Harrington is (neither do I particularly care) and I would safely assume that the person making the accusation has no idea what religion I am? Taking a stab in the dark I would think that she is probably Christian. I am Christian too? You get where I'm coming from here?

It does irritate me being accused of things that I'm quite clearly not but I don't lose much sleep over it. Sticks and Stones and all that sort of stuff apply. It's not the first time and won't be the last I'm sure.

But it passes the day.

junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-80351311167545160952021-08-04T10:19:00.001-07:002021-08-04T10:19:24.830-07:00SO HERE'S THE THING ON SUFFRAGETTES AND LATE NIGHT 'DOCUMENTAIRIES.
My sleep routine has been pretty much all over the place for years now. Mostly I sleep during the day and am up and about most of the night.

Much of the time I do watch some Documentaries on those irrelevant Sky History Channels or even some of the true Crime programmes that are very much a constant now as part of their programming schedule.

They irritate me greatly sometimes.

Documentaries are supposed to be factual. Right? So how come many of them, but not all, still peddle ancient myths, rumours and lies as truth?

For some unknown reason they seem to be having a lot of programs recently about the Suffragette movement. Don't know why and am assuming it's some sort of anniversary that I'm not aware of.

They are nearly always celebratory in nature. You can imagine the sort of thing?

I have a few problems with that in general.

Were the aims of the movement justified? Absolutely. 100%.

But should we really be celebrating an organisation that was happy to use bombing. arson and various other violent methods as legitimate? Not in my world. No. Tell the history yes but please don't glorify it.

One thing in particular they get wrong time and time again.

The death of Emily Davison.

And yes in your mind already is the thought that that was the woman who threw herself in front of the King's horse in an apparent suicidal move to attract attention to the cause.

Only she didn't.

Five minutes research will clearly show that it was an accident and she did not, as commonly perceived, commit deliberate suicide.

Modern technology has slowed the footage down and analysed it thoroughly. She was, in fact, trying to place a sash of some sort around the horses neck as it rode past and couldn't get out the way quickly enough and was sadly killed in the process.

But still the fact checkers don't seem to able to do a quick Google search on these programs and are still telling the old myth over and over and over again.

Not good and not professional.

junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.9301226.287051163821161 -41.08637 82.907518836178852 29.22613tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-41969166857401732462021-07-26T05:49:00.004-07:002021-07-27T05:01:11.485-07:00ON ISLAMOPHOBIA, THE BIBLE AND ALL THAT JAZZ.
One of the things I'm often (wrongly) accused of is being Islamophobic or Anti-Islam. It's not true, obviously, much like all the other things.

I've never read the Koran and don't personally know anyone who is Muslim. There isn't a big Muslim community here in Northern Ireland.

I think most of it comes from my absolute support of Israel's right to self defence which I make no apologies for. In some minds that makes me Anti Islam. So be it.

What we hear from the news is only about the Radical and frequently violent form of that by the likes of ISIS, Hamas and the Taliban. Am I against that? Absolutely as I expect the vast majority of Muslims are.

I can't abide those who will frequently lambaste the Koran for saying this thing and another. Some of them don't appear to have read much of the Old Testament lately.

Which brings me nicely to this.

I was at my own Church last Sunday. I'm not really a regular but I do attend once in awhile.

Anyway, Sunday's Old Testament reading was from 2 Samuel, Chapter 11, verses 1-15.

I won't type it all out verbatim but the story goes something like this.

King David, yes as in Goliath, 'Once in Royal David's City' etc has sent his armies off to war. As apparently they do in the Spring. They have destroyed the Ammonites and are besieging another City. So nothing like a bit of Warmongering and Genocide so far. David is up on the roof of his palace and is leering at a girl having a bath in an adjacent building. So some voyeurism here too. So far so good?

He asks one of his servants (slavery perhaps?) to go and find out who she is. He learns that she is the wife of one of his Generals who is currently away killing people. David, naturally isn't leading his troops.

He sends for her, has sex with her and she finds out later that she is pregnant. So some adultery to add to the mix. There is also a pretty disturbing line about 'a woman's monthly uncleanliness' but I won't go there.

When her husband comes back from the War David invites him over. I'm assuming here that the poor man isn't aware that David has shagged his wife and is pregnant? He gets him drunk and plies him with gifts as a sort of pay off I assume?

Next, when the unfortunate man is heading back to the front lines David makes a plan with his top Commander that the man is directly placed in the front line so that he will be killed in the upcoming battle.

Charming.

I fairness I haven't read the preceding Chapters or the one's after so there may be some context I'm missing here but still.....

My Vicar handled this fairly disturbing story quite well. I'm sure it wasn't easy for him to find anything positive to say from that particular segment.

So what's the meaning on this little fable?

That old one about 'People in Glass houses shouldn't throw stones' is appropriate.

Don't condemn religions or texts that you know nothing about. All religions have stuff in them which isn't very palatable. The Bible included.

I'll probably be accused of being Anti-Christian now.

Such is life?
junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.9301226.287051163821161 -41.08637 82.907518836178852 29.22613tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-43461490067049528512021-06-26T18:04:00.002-07:002021-06-26T19:26:18.571-07:00SHORT BOOK REVIEW

STEPHEN KING

THE INSTITUTE.

I'm happy to confess that I am one of Mr.King's 'constant readers'. His books have played a huge part in my life for about as long as I can remember. For me, the man is a genius and one of only a few authors whose new books I will buy in Hardback as soon as they are released.

But. And it's a big but..recently he seems to have lost something? Maybe it's age or a reaction to the awful accident he had a few years ago or something else but his last few have left me with a distinct disappointment.

This one I'm sorry to say is another one of those.

No spoilers as per usual but the plot involves a secret organisation who are kidnapping kids with latent physic abilities. They are being taken to 'The Institute' where these abilities are being enhanced and are then used to carry out various nefarious tasks including murder. Needless to say The Institute isn't the most pleasant place to reside and the kids are routinely tortured and discarded once their usefulness is over. One group of kids decide to rebel.

You may think it's all very Firestarter and you'd be absolutely correct. It is VERY Firestarter.

He always writes children well and does here to but there is just something missing. I'm usually gripped by a new SK from paragraph one on page one but here I wasn't. I found myself not really caring about any of the main characters and some of the others like The Institutes 'ferocious' head was about as threatening as a bowl of vegetable soup.

It all ends very much as expected.

I didn't enjoy it. It was a chore to read. I've felt a similar way to his last few I'm extremely sad to say. He just seems to have ran out of ideas?

Still be a 'constant reader' and will still read everything the man ever writes but I can't really recommend this one at all. Go back and re read 'The Stand'. You'll be glad you did.

junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.9301226.287051163821161 -41.08637 82.907518836178852 29.22613tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-34907123112385069362021-06-10T11:49:00.000-07:002021-06-10T11:49:44.825-07:00SHORT BOOK REVIEW

12 MONKEYS

ELIZABETH HAND.

Movie tie in.

12 Monkeys (The Movie) and 12 Monkeys (The Series) are two of my favourites.

This one is based on the Movie only as it was published at that time when the TV Series was only on someones 'what if' wish list.

Written by someone called Elizabeth Hand who i'd not heard tell of before or since.
For those that don't know Lough Foyle sits in between County Londonderry in Northern Ireland and County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland (ROI). Ownership of said lough is in dispute between the UK Government and their counterparts in the ROI. It's be going on for awhile now and a conclusion doesn't seem to be getting any closer.

However, on TV tonight in Northern Ireland on a program highlighting the details of this, one of the commentators, i can't remember which one unfortunately, stated that this dispute had been going on for 'hundreds of years'.

Ummm...strange. Consider this.

The Island of Ireland was split in 1922 after violent insurrection against British control. Subsequently the Republic of Ireland was also formally formed then. The six counties that form Northern Ireland remained a part of the UK. Before that the entire Island of Ireland had been under British control for hundreds and hundreds of years.

Now even considering my appalling mathematics that is 96 years ago.

So who then was disputing ownership of the Lough, as the commentator stated, for hundreds of years?
Before 1922 the entire Island of Ireland was a part of the United Kingdom so the lough was also part of the United Kingdom?

Therefore before 1922 ownership of the Lough wasn't disputed by anybody? So where the commentator gets hundreds of years from is lost on me. I do wish someone had asked him but unfortunately no one asked him to clarify his ridiculous comment.

And before someone starts nothing political here just simple geography (and a bit of History).
Personally i couldn't really care less about Lough Foyle. Never been there and probably never will but still....i do like to nit pick about these sorts of things.junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com2Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.930119999999988154.450095000000005 -6.2528434999999885 54.744475000000008 -5.6073964999999877tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-6648586366819162652018-02-26T04:01:00.002-08:002018-02-26T04:01:57.876-08:00SO HERE'S THE THING...ON SYRIATEXT TO FOLLOWjunkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-5940659419867171742017-10-09T18:30:00.001-07:002017-10-09T18:50:24.404-07:00COLLECTION ADDITION.

Hard Playstation Vita games are pretty difficult to come across these days so i was really pleased to get hold of this one recently.
It's actually a Chinese Official release with a English language option which makes a pleasant change.
I know that Limited Run Games have also released a very limited hard copy of Ys Origin too but it's different from this one (Box Art etc) and like most LRG releases it's now impossible to find unless you are willing to pay a lot for it.

I haven't tried it yet, so many games so little time, but i do like some of the Ys series of games so i'm hopeful that i'll appreciate this one too.junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.930119999999988154.450095000000005 -6.2528434999999885 54.744475000000008 -5.6073964999999877tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-5337664464319801562017-09-21T17:18:00.000-07:002017-09-21T18:23:25.793-07:00On Plagiarism and Katniss Everdeen.I read a lot of the old so-called 'Pulp' Science Fiction and Fantasy magazines mainly from the 1950's and 1960's. They go back much longer than that and some are still going today but that's another story for another day.

Anyway, at the minute i'm about half way through the May-June 1974 issue of Worlds of IF.
It contains a short story by Fred Saberhagen called Berserker's Planet and the plot seemed somewhat familiar to me.

Part of the back story in the first chapter goes something like this -

'The God was pleased to grant to humankind the privilege of fighting for a seat at his right hand, the competition being open to the sixty-four finest heroes of the age. To accomplish this purpose the inhabited world had been arbitrarily divided into 64 districts, and the local rulers of every district where invited to send - the details of the selection process being left largely up to them-their mightiest warrior. All but one of the contestants was expected to die in the Tournament, and that one, the winner, would be granted the status of a demi-god and would take his seat at God's right hand'.

Ummmm...
Yep. Me too.junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.930119999999988154.450095000000005 -6.2528434999999885 54.744475000000008 -5.6073964999999877tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-6035683220017151222015-02-15T18:30:00.001-08:002015-02-15T18:30:09.898-08:00TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG.There are many things that irritate me about growing older. Loosing my hair and having to urinate much more often than i used to are just two of them.
The other one is death.
When you're younger all there ever seems to be is engagements, weddings and babies being born. Nowadays the only things i seem to hear about is someone dying.

An old friend of mine died this weekend. I use 'old friend' for want of another, more appropriate description.
I never really liked the guy that much and always got the feeling that he felt a similar way about me, but i did spend a fair few of my formative teenage years in his company. I haven't seen or spoken to him in probably over 30 years but it's still upset me (just a little).

The newspaper obit said he had 4 children and I'm obviously sad for them.
There is something intrinsically unfair about this whole living business it seems.
Here's me, drifting along day by day with, in reality, no sort of life whatsoever and the chances of ever having a family more or less gone and this poor bloke dies at an early enough age. I think, if memory serves me correctly, that he was a few years younger than me. I've no idea how he died. He might have been ill for years for all I know. It's just not right somehow?

If i feel like it I may even pop along to his funeral on Tuesday but I probably won't. That would mean getting up during the day and I don't do that much these days.

So there you have it. Another one bites the dust and I'll still probably wake up in the morning.
I never tire of reading her story time after time after time. It's still as new to me now as it was about 40 years ago when i first heard it.
Nevertheless, i still do get irritated once and awhile when there is a new book or a documentary that gets it wrong.

Recently, a new book cover boasted of the story of the 'infamous' Queen of England. Now, obviously, the Queen of England thing is wrong but if i had a pound for how many times supposed 'Historians' got that one wrong i'd be a multi millionaire by now. She was the Queen of England, Wales, The Island of Ireland, parts of Scotland, Parts of France etc etc which, if truth be told is a bit of a mouthful to say or write every time and many writers use England as a convenience. It's still wrong though.
I did email the author to ask her just how and in what way she considered Anne to be infamous but she declined to reply unfortunately.

I also disagree strongly that Anne was Mary Boleyn's younger sister. The truth is that there is no solid evidence left now to prove or disprove it either way but for me what evidence there actually is points very strongly to the exact opposite.
We know very little of Mary Boleyn. What we do know is that, in Tudor times, the first born was usually the only one in wealthy families that received a substantial education. Therefore, it only makes sense that if Mary was the first born they it would have been she who received grooming and education. We know that Mary didn't and the evidence shows that she was uneducated and a rather frivolous individual. Anne was the daughter who was sent to France and Austria to receive a first class education. It only stands to common sense then that Anne was indeed the elder daughter. We'll probably never know for 100% certainty that that was the case but you know it makes sense?

I'm also drawn back to a comment on an old school report of mine from when i was about 13. I had a horrible History teacher who's name i've long forgotten. On this report she wrote 'Kenneth is experiencing difficulty and clearly has no interest in this subject'. If only she had taken the time, then, to realise that it was the only subject that i had any interest in. An interest whose flame still burns brightly over 40 years later.junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.930119999999988154.450095000000005 -6.2528434999999885 54.744475000000008 -5.6073964999999877tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-31632954513557180362014-08-01T18:00:00.000-07:002014-08-01T18:00:13.243-07:00THAT OLE BLACK DOG AGAIN....Sometimes he hides in the background only to rear his unwanted head just when you least expect him.
Most days he's there but some days he's more visible than others.
Today's been one of those days. There he is front, left and centre. Even a few episodes of The Waltons didn't help.
The loneliness is hard to get around. On days like this when you don't see or speak to another member of the human race. No enthusiasm even for EFUK and i always find some enthusiasm for that somewhere.
So what to do about it? Not a lot unfortunately.
As a old shrink used to say 'Nobody can click there fingers and give you a life'.
How true is that.
I often wonder what i've actually done to deserve this?
Who knows?
Who cares?junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-39657330398086717692014-03-26T11:10:00.001-07:002014-03-26T11:10:51.639-07:00WHEN GOOD NEWS IS BAD NEWS?TEXT TO FOLLOWjunkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-66897857522641645392014-01-18T06:39:00.001-08:002014-02-13T05:41:52.881-08:00ON FACEBOOK.....AND LAURA ROBSON.

I watch ladies tennis. I like ladies tennis.
Not for the reason you might imagine that they are a lot of really hot ladies tennis players and they wear skimpy outfits. That helps but it's not that difficult to find footage of hot ladies wearing skimpy outfits if that's the sort of the thing you are interested in?

The men's game leaves me cold. It's all about power. The harder the serve the shorter the game. It's different for the ladies.

My favourite is our own Laura Robson. She's done very well over the last few years and it's been great to watch her progression. On and off the court she behaves impeccably, never does anything even remotely controversial and appears to be a sports star that can be looked up to as an example.

I follow Laura on Facebook. It's a depressing experience.
She frequently gives us, her fans, a brief glimpse into her private life. Show's us how her training is going and does her best to provide a little bit of news and commentary on things she is interested in and passionate about.

Laura's page shows some of the true negative side of Facebook and the whole social media thing in general.
Yes, she's an attractive girl but every single time she posts something there is a deluge of crude, sexual comments posted by many who seemingly get some sort of a thrill out of that sort of thing.
You can probably imagine the sort of thing i mean without having to repeat any of it.

It's sad that some people live such pathetic lives that they would do such a thing.
It's not big and it's not clever.
Not by a very long way.junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9928501.post-6045759463242149372013-12-25T14:03:00.001-08:002013-12-25T14:09:03.329-08:00L.O.L.I.T.A.
They say there is no fool like a old fool (whoever 'they' are).
They are right.
It's Christmas Day apparently. In Junkmale world it's Wednesday. Much the same as any other Wednesday only more shit.
Last year i spent most of the day waiting for a message from the only person i actually really wanted to get a message from. It didn't arrive.
This year i did exactly the same thing with the same negative result.
How sad am i?
The only thing i know for sure is that i won't be doing the same next year if I'm unfortunate enough to still be here.junkmalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11177949865315728718noreply@blogger.com0Belfast, UK54.597285000000007 -5.930119999999988154.450095000000005 -6.2528434999999885 54.744475000000008 -5.6073964999999877
